Ayurveda Life Style: Bring Rhythm Back into Your Life with Dinacharya

What is does it mean to have vibrant health, live life with meaning, and have a deep sense of peace, contentment, and purpose? Ayurveda means knowledge of life, and it originated in India more than 5,000 years ago. It is the oldest continuously practiced health care system in the world, coming from an understanding of nature’s natural rhythms and laws and working with the imbalances that show up as signs of disease in the mind and body. Today, we are applauded for being over-worked, stressed, and exhausted. We are taught that stress, anxiety, and chronic disease are a normal part of life and aging. However, this could not be further from the truth. Ayurveda teaches us that there is always a choice, providing us with effective and intuitive tools that can be used to evaluate the degree of disharmony, whether slight or severe, to determine its cause and give us the practices to reclaim optimal health.

Sleep Hygiene and Why Sleep is the Most Important Life Change

How well do you sleep? Do you have difficulty falling asleep?  Do you wake up in the middle of the night? Do you stay up too late and get up too early?

We spend approximately one-third of our lives asleep. This leads to the essential question: why do we need sleep? What is clear is that quality sleep is a staple of optimal health. But even though we know this, many of us are not making time for quality sleep. Because of busy lifestyles, we do not truly receive the health benefits of sleep.

As we drift off to sleep, our bodies begin their night-shift work. This is the time when it detoxifies and clears itself of physical toxins and processes daily emotions.

Hormones and Why Stress Matters

Society places a badge of honor on those who are over-committed and upholding a busy life. With continual outside pressure, the adrenal glands have to work overtime to make enough stress hormones to sustain the perpetual cycle.

Our bodies struggle to balance the increased levels of adrenaline and cortisol in the bloodstream. In return, the body responds by increasing the production of balancing hormones with opposing energies (ie. estrogen, progesterone, testosterone).

This strains our adrenal glands and hormonal system. Eventually, our bodies simply can’t keep up with the demand. The endocrine system then gives signals that something is off.

Self-Regulation of Emotions: Creating Awareness and Open Perspective

Coordinating self-awareness in conjunction with emotional responses takes practice. The first steps are defining and understanding your own emotions.

When lacking self-awareness, trying to manage emotions is like sitting in a canoe without an oar. In the lake of your own emotions, you are at the mercy of whatever wave or storm comes your way. With no idea where to go how to arrive there, all you can do is sit and wallow in it.

People often attempt to control their emotions and discover that they only become more emotional and reactive. Emotions cannot be controlled. Emotions are signals from our feelings telling us to pay attention to something. From there, we have a choice to act, react, or do nothing at all. Emotions are not inherently “good” or “bad.” It is how we react to them that matters.

Nutrition: Happy Belly Nourished Life

Our culture’s ideology of the human body is superficial. It influences how we feel about our personal body type, causing a misunderstanding of what our bodies really need to thrive. Ultimately, this affects our self-esteem and our perception of self.

Along with digestion, unhealthy or irregular dietary habits, unmanaged and accumulated stress, unsupportive relationships, inactive lifestyles, and environmental toxins can challenge your body’s ability to digest food properly. A weak digestive system results in the accumulation of ama, or toxins, that cause imbalance, disease, and premature aging. Your digestion is a true reflection of your mental-emotional-physical state of balance or imbalance. A few signs of a stressed digestive system and accumulation of toxins are fatigue and lack of motivation, mental fogginess and forgetfulness, recurring infections and illnesses, and weight gain.

Exercise: Less Pain and More Gain

Exercise has been an important part of the Ayurvedic routine for thousands of years but it is looked very different. Today exercise focuses on rigorous routines, with exhausting results. It has become a modern fad, not suitable for optimal wellness. According to Ayurveda, exercise gets rid of heaviness and stiffness of the body, because it burns digestive impurities and toxins (ama) this creates more flexibility, lightness, smoothness and ease of life.

Benefits of paper exercise include enhanced ability to work, better endurance and brings shape to our body. It pacifies all body types (three doshas) and creates balance for the body type and in each season. It enhances the digestion, metabolism, and if done appropriately detoxifies and cleanses impurities from the tissues. Exercise strengthens immunity, in turn reducing or eliminating fatigue, stop early aging, and helps us to maintain a optimal weight.Ayurveda teaches us a well-rounded life with routine, individually focused practices, complete approach to healing and health, and is spiritual in nature. These balance out our busy lives. Ayurvedic philosophy embraces the concept that coming back to balance must focus on levels: physical, mental, emotional, psychological, and spiritual.
