A Little Lemon History
Lemons originated in northwestern India, where they have been cultivated for more than 2,500 years. Lemons were then brought to Spain and North Africa between around 1000 and 1200 C.E. They then traveled to Europe and finally to the Americas by the hand of Christopher Columbus. They were commonly used as an ornamental fruit and were later used for culinary and medical purposes.
- Ancient Egyptians: they held the common belief that eating lemons and drinking lemon juice were effective protection against many poisons
- Ancient Greeks: used lemons to preserve food, sanitize, cleanse water, and treat illnesses.
- Romans: protected clothes against moths and later used this citrus fruit in cooking and drinks.
Today, we all know lemons are most commonly found in kitchens, but they are also used in many other ways:
- Lemon oil is often used in aromatherapy to improve mood.
- Lemons can be used for a variety of cosmetic purposes: to reduce acne, remove blemishes, and act as a natural deodorant.
- Lemon oil can be used to create DIY mosquito repellant. Perfect for those muggy Minnesota evenings!
- A lemon dipped in salt or baking powder can be used to brighten copper cookware by dissolving the tarnish. The juice is also used to deodorize, remove grease, bleach stains, and disinfect.
- Lemons are used in treating scurvy, the common cold, and flu, kidney stones, inflammation, and the list goes on and on…
