The Shift Show Building CommUnity and Wellness One Step at a Time: Just Breathe The Healing Powers of Breath with Kamie and Jenna

Take a deep breath…

Let me ask you a few questions. How deep do you breathe? Are you a mouth breather? Do you snore at night? Are your breaths slow, deep, and through your nose?
Most of us know by now that taking a deep breath is a great way to reduce stress and increase blood flow. But here is a little twist, we often over breath. This means we are taking short, choppy, restricted breaths through our mouth. Over breathing does precisely the opposite of what we are trying to accomplish.
Research has shown that when we breathe slow, deep, and through our nose, we activate our parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest response), rather than short, shallow, and upper chest breaths that activate our sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight response).
Did you know that pranayama, breathing techniques, have been used to treat GERD, asthma, boost lung health, support digestion, decrease pulmonary edema, and more in western medical practice?
Western medical research has loads of studies to support what eastern medicine has known for thousands of years. Many studies support the benefits of breathing on cardiovascular and lung health but are starting to dive deeper into how breathing works in immune function, breast health, digestion, and more. A few more benefits of proper breathing and pranayama techniques are:
  • build immunity
  • exchange carbon dioxide/oxygen in tissues and organs
  • reduces stress by activating the parasympathetic nervous system
  • reduces blood pressure
  • maintains a healthy inflammation response
  • increase in concentration and reduces fatigue
  • relieves muscle tension
  • relieves abdominal discomfort, gut health, and digestion
  • boosts mental health and mood
  • helps cardiovascular and heart health and builds lung capacity
  • aids sleep and reduce incidences of sleep apnea
